Experimenting with scenes and animals
For this drawing I wanted to draw Buck talking with a bear, sat in front of a mountain range. Unfortunately in this scan you can't see the background as much as I'd like. I used blue and purple watercolour for the background to make it look cold. In contrast with the cold background I used warm tones for the animals. To add texture on the bear and Buck I used a thiner watercolour brush to add small quick brush strokes. Overall, if I redid this drawing in acrylic I think it would make a really lovely print or even Christmas card if I added Santa hats on them and make it snowing.
Originally I did this digital illustration for 'Inktober', however, I think this bear fits into this blog about experimenting. Even though I did this for 'Inktober' actually inspired my previous drawings so even though it does't completely fit with my winter theme, it helped me with my development.
Although this is an autumnal scene I could definitely add snow on to the drawing and take away the leaves to turn it into a more Christmassy scene. Also, in the book "Call Of the Wild" it takes place over a few years and in some different seasons so it would still be reminiscent of the other animals Buck finds along the way.
This could definitely be sold as a print or sticker too.
I decided to attempt to change the digital drawing into a snowy scene. Overall I think if I drew it in my sketchbook then the mountains could look more realistic. I do think that the bear looks effective hibernating in the snow and I do like how I've added the snow on top of his fur. I just need to improve the background going forward.
For these experiments I thought it would be interesting to use rubber stamps to make some prints. I wanted the trees to be bright and colourful, similar to how much Buck loves them in the book and longs to run through them. I also wanted to make some bears prints because I loved I used quick brush strokes in my previous drawings and thought it could look very effective with the rubber stamps. The most impressive rubber stamps on this page would be the bear on top of the yellow watercolour and the 4 tall trees that differentiate in colours.
I also did some of these rubber stamp prints for the jungle book. However, I don't think these of as impressive as the previous prints. The most effective ones of these rubber stamps would be the vine print I made or the sloth bear. However I definitely could improve this further if I did these prints on lino instead.
