Experimenting with scenes and animals

Image
For this drawing I wanted to draw Buck talking with a bear, sat in front of a mountain range. Unfortunately in this scan you can't see the background as much as I'd like. I used blue and purple watercolour for the background to make it look cold. In contrast with the cold background I used warm tones for the animals. To add texture on the bear and Buck I used a thiner watercolour brush to add small quick brush strokes. Overall, if I redid this drawing in acrylic I think it would make a really lovely print or even Christmas card if I added Santa hats on them and make it snowing.   Originally I did this digital illustration for 'Inktober', however, I think this bear fits into this blog about experimenting. Even though  I did this for 'Inktober' actually inspired my previous drawings so even though it does't completely fit with my winter theme, it helped me with my development.  Although this is an autumnal scene I could definitely add snow on to the drawing ...

More sketches and ideas for my project

Image
This is a watercolour painting of an Alaskan mountain range inspired by the book Call of the Wild. I wanted to frame the mountain range with a couple of trees. This would be a good idea for a postcard or a Christmas card. When I develop this idea I think I will add snow into the picture to give it a more festive feel to it. I think what was most successful from this painting is the blues and purple tones creating depth in the mountains. I could make this better by adding more trees and scenery.  On this page of my sketchbook I wanted to draw the animals that appear in the book call of the Wild but I wanted to make less realistic to my previous sketches and I also wanted to experiment with scale. My favourite illustration would be of the bear mainly because of its long snout and small beady eyes. I also like the use of watercolour in all of these illustrations. I think the design for Buck looks quite successful too. I think the bushy ginger eyebrows help the character look ol...

Sketches inspired by the Jungle Book

Image
This sketch is inspired by one of the opening scenes of the Jungle Book when Shere Khan, the wolves and Bagheera. I first drew the wolves and used watercolour to add texture and colour. Then I drew the tiger and black panther. I did the wolves separate to the tiger and panther but I will develop this idea, add a background and accurately draw the animals to scale.  This second ketch is inspired by a temple scene in the book. This temple in the jungle is abandoned and filled with monkeys. To develop this sketch I will make sure to add in the monkeys hanging off different places and swinging between the temples. I think this could make it more colourful and exciting to look at. I really like how the water colour looks in this drawing because it accentuates how old the temple is.  For this drawing I decided to redraw Shere Khan. I wanted to draw him looking proud and alert. This was done by him sitting calming but his ears perked up, listening to the jungle. I wanted to draw simp...

Market Research

Image
While researching what target market I should aim my products at, I decided to look at my insights on Instagram, where I usually post most of my artworks. What I found out was that most of the people that follow, support me   and like my posts range from age 18-24 and are mainly women.  I thought that this could be an interesting way to target my future products for this module. I would have more of a chance of selling my products if I appeal to my already existing audience on Instagram.

Initial drawings of Call of the Wild

Image
This drawing is inspired from the quote in the book “this white stuff falling through the air... sniffed it curiously... licked some on his tongue... it was his first snow”. I wanted the background to be simple but bright because this is one of few happy memories for Buck in the book. I used a watercolour brush on Procreate for the background and on a second layer I drew white dots and blurred them slightly to show that the snow was falling. I drew Buck with bright colours to match how he was feeling. I kept the drawing of Buck quite realistic, however as I progress through this course I will experiment with more abstract ways of drawing Buck and the background.  Overall, I think that this illustration was successful, however I could improve it by making the background more interesting. I think the warm tones of Buck’s coat and the cool tones of the background are effective but to create a different atmosphere to the drawing I could experiment by drawing Buck with cool tones or the...

Moodboards and initial drawings in response to books

Image
The Call of the Wild  The Jungle Book  Initial response to The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling  Initial drawings and response to the Call of the Wild Further responses in watercolour. This is to represent when Buck is stolen from home and shoved into a kennel ready to be taken to Alaska. I wanted to make this drawing look like Buck was miserable because in the book this is what drives him to breaking point and and has to obey the "club".
